A punishment in sports in which a player is sent off the field for a serious rule violation. In football/soccer, this is often indicated by a red card.

The word is made up of 'der Platz' (the place/field) and 'der Verweis' (the reprimand/order). A 'Verweis' is an official instruction or punishment. So a Platzverweis is literally an instruction to leave a particular place.

An authority (referee, police) 'erteilt' (issues) a Platzverweis (sending-off/exclusion order). The person who has to leave 'bekommt' or 'erhält' (gets/receives) a Platzverweis.

When the verb 'erteilen' (to issue/grant) is used, the person who receives the Platzverweis (sending-off/exclusion order) is in the dative. The pattern is: someone (nominative) issues something (accusative) to someone (dative).

In a sports context, the 'Platzverweis' (sending-off) is the most severe punishment for a player. In football/soccer, it is often symbolized by the 'Rote Karte' (red card) and pronounced by the 'Schiedsrichter' (referee).

'der Ausschluss' and 'der Platzverweis' both have to do with someone not being allowed to stay or continue taking part. 'Ausschluss' is the general term and can apply to many situations, for example a club, an event, or a course. 'Platzverweis' is more specific: in sports, a player has to leave the field, or the police order someone to leave a particular place. A 'Platzverweis' is therefore often a special form of exclusion from a specific area.
