A person who sits at the entrance of a building (e.g., a company, hotel, or hospital), controls access, provides information, and often also manages keys.

The word is derived from 'die Pforte' (the gate), an old word for a large gate or entrance. The ending '-ner' denotes a male person who performs an activity. So a Pförtner is literally a 'man at the gate.'
