prahlen vs gefallen

to please / to fall

'sich gefallen in' and 'prahlen' can both have to do with self-satisfied behavior. 'prahlen' means that someone talks openly and exaggeratedly about their own successes, money, or abilities. 'sich in etwas gefallen' is a more fixed and rather elevated expression: someone enjoys a role or behavior and clearly shows it. The person does not necessarily have to show off loudly. For ordinary showing off in everyday life, 'prahlen' is much more natural. 'sich gefallen in' fits better when describing an attitude or role.

Visual example for gefallen
prahlen

Nach dem Spiel prahlte Tom mit seinen drei Toren.

After the game, Tom boasted about his three goals.

gefallen

Er gefällt sich in der Rolle des klugen Beraters.

He revels in the role of the clever adviser.
