'der Bau' and 'das Quartier' can both refer to a sheltered place for animals. 'der Bau' is especially used for animals that live underground or seek protection there, for example foxes or badgers. 'das Quartier' is more general and means more of a resting place or shelter, often for a certain period of time, for example a 'Winterquartier' (winter quarters). The words can be confused because both can seem like an animal home. 'Bau' is more natural when you are thinking of an underground animal den or burrow; 'Quartier' fits better when it is about a temporary resting or sheltered place.
