The different meanings of 'Radio' (radio) can often be recognized by the verbs and prepositions. A device is 'an-' or 'ausgemacht' (turned on or off), you hear something 'im' Radio (on the radio, medium), and you work 'beim' Radio (in radio, institution).
Kannst du bitte das Radio anmachen?
Can you please turn on the radio?
When referring to the device, the verbs 'einschalten' (to switch on), 'ausschalten' (to switch off), 'anmachen' (to turn on), and 'ausmachen' (to turn off) are typically used. 'Lauter stellen' (to turn up) or 'leiser stellen' (to turn down) also refers to the device.
Jeden Morgen schalte ich das Radio in der Küche ein.
Every morning I switch on the radio in the kitchen.
When 'Radio' (radio) refers to the medium, it is often connected with what you hear. Typical phrases are 'Nachrichten im Radio' (news on the radio), 'Musik im Radio hören' (to listen to music on the radio), or 'ein Lied läuft im Radio' (a song is playing on the radio).
Dieses Lied läuft den ganzen Tag im Radio.
This song plays on the radio all day long.
While in most of the German-speaking world it is 'das Radio' (neuter), in Austria the masculine form 'der Radio' is also very common.
Der Radio in der Werkstatt ist schon sehr alt.
The radio in the workshop is already very old.
program / shipment
'das Radio' and 'die Sendung' can both be connected to listening to programs. 'Radio' means the medium or the programming as a whole, and sometimes also the device. 'Sendung' means an individual segment or a specific program on the radio or on television. So you can listen to a 'Sendung' on the radio. There is a risk of confusion because the two words often occur together. If you mean the whole medium, use 'Radio'. If you mean a specific program, use 'Sendung'.

Die Sendung über gesunde Ernährung beginnt um acht Uhr.
