Usage tips
Describing the direction of growth
When describing plant growth, 'ranken' (to climb / trail) is often used without 'sich' (itself). With 'an' plus the dative, you name the support; 'empor' (upward) or 'hoch' (up) describes the direction of growth.
EXAMPLE
Die Bohnen ranken an einer Holzstange empor.
The beans climb up a wooden pole.
Reflexive construction
The pattern is 'sich um etwas ranken' (to twine around something), with the accusative after 'um'. With one plant or several plants, the reflexive pronoun 'sich' (itself/themselves) stays the same.

Eine Kletterrose rankt sich um den Torbogen.
A climbing rose twines around the archway.

Typical sentence opening
With stories and legends, the phrase with 'um' (around) often comes at the beginning of the sentence. It is often followed by the pattern 'ranken sich' (surround) and only then the subject; the verb form agrees with that subject.
