A yellow-flowering crop from the cruciferous plant family, grown mainly for producing cooking oil (rapeseed oil/canola oil) and as animal feed.

In an agricultural context, 'Raps' (rapeseed/canola) is often used with the verbs 'anbauen' (to grow/cultivate), 'blühen' (to bloom), and 'ernten' (to harvest).

'der Senf' and 'der Raps' can be confused as plants because both bloom yellow and belong to similar crop plants. Here, 'Senf' means the mustard plant, whose seeds are used for the spicy condiment. 'Raps' is grown mainly to produce oil from it, for example 'Rapsöl' (rapeseed oil / canola oil). In everyday life, people often first think of the condiment on the plate when they hear 'Senf', not the plant. When talking about yellow fields and oil, 'Raps' is usually meant. When it is about the plant for mustard seeds or the condiment, 'Senf' fits.
