Verbs ending in '-ieren'

He researched the facts for his presentation.
Correct preposition
The preposition depends on what you are researching. You research 'nach' something specific (dative), 'über' a topic (accusative), or 'in' a source (dative).

The detective is researching new clues.
Typical collocations
'Recherchieren' (to research) is often used in professional contexts. Typical combinations are 'im Internet recherchieren' (to research on the internet), 'gründlich recherchieren' (to research thoroughly), or 'Fakten und Informationen recherchieren' (to research facts and information).

recherchieren vs suchen
to search / look for
'suchen' and 'recherchieren' can both mean that you want to find information. But 'suchen' is much more general and also fits lost things, apartments, or simple answers. 'recherchieren' is used when you systematically collect and check information on a topic, for example for an article, a paper, or a report. The words can be confused because when you research, you also search. 'recherchieren' is more natural when it is about thorough information work; 'suchen' fits better for a simple or everyday search.
