Usage tips
Compound word
The word is made up of 'Recht' (law), the linking -s, and 'Anwalt' (lawyer). So it literally describes a lawyer who deals with the law.
EXAMPLE
Ein Rechtsanwalt muss das deutsche Recht sehr gut kennen.
A lawyer must know German law very well.
Typical verbs
Common verbs used with 'Rechtsanwalt' (lawyer) are 'einen Rechtsanwalt beauftragen' (to hire a lawyer), 'einschalten' (to bring in), or 'konsultieren' (to consult).
EXAMPLE
Wegen des Problems mit dem Vermieter hat er einen Rechtsanwalt eingeschaltet.
Because of the problem with the landlord, he brought in a lawyer.
Correct preposition
When you want to express that you are going to see a lawyer, you use the preposition 'zu' with the dative: 'zum Rechtsanwalt gehen' (to go to the lawyer).
EXAMPLE
Morgen muss ich wegen der Sache zum Rechtsanwalt.
Tomorrow I have to go to the lawyer about the matter.

Rechtsanwalt vs Richter
judge
'der Richter' and 'der Rechtsanwalt' both belong to the area of law and court. But they have different roles. A judge leads a proceeding and decides at the end which judgment applies. A lawyer advises and represents a person, for example in court. Learners may confuse the words because both are legal professions and appear in the courtroom. The important point is: 'der Rechtsanwalt' is on the side of a person, while 'der Richter' decides the case neutrally.
Rechtsanwalt
Im Gericht spricht der Rechtsanwalt für seinen Kunden.
In court, the lawyer speaks for his client.
Richter
Nach der Verhandlung erklärt der Richter sein Urteil.
