The word is composed of 'die Reihe' (a line or series of things) and 'die Folge' (a sequence). So 'Reihenfolge' is literally the 'sequence of the row.'

To describe a specific order, the preposition 'in' is almost always used. Typical expressions are 'in der richtigen Reihenfolge' (in the correct order) or 'in alphabetischer Reihenfolge' (in alphabetical order).

'die Folge' and 'die Reihenfolge' can both describe how things come one after another. However, 'die Reihenfolge' especially means the order: what comes first, and what comes after that? 'die Folge' can also mean an ordered series, but it sounds more general and also has other meanings, for example consequence or episode. The words can be confused when talking about several steps or elements. When the exact order is important, 'die Reihenfolge' is usually more natural.
