The word is derived from 'die Rente' (pension). The ending '-in' shows that it refers to a female person. A Rentnerin is therefore a woman who receives a pension.

The word family around 'Rente' (pension) and 'Rentner' (pensioner/retiree) has nothing to do with the English word 'rent' (Miete). A Rentnerin is a 'pensioner' or 'retiree', not a person who rents something.

Ms. Keller is retired and has been receiving a pension since the end of her working life.
