The word is made up of 'rück' (back) and 'Lage' (position/situation). It describes something that has been 'zurückgelegt' (set aside) (money) or a body position in which you 'zurücklegt' (lean back).

'Vorlage' and 'Rücklage' look similar because they are formed with 'vor' and 'rück'. This can make them easy to confuse. In meaning, however, they are usually clearly different. A 'Vorlage' is placed before someone so they can continue working with it: as a template, model, or official proposal. A 'Rücklage' is set aside: usually money for later, or in sports, a backward-leaning posture. As an opposite idea, you can remember: a 'Vorlage' serves as a basis now, while a 'Rücklage' stays set aside for later for the time being.
