Schaufel vs Blatt

leaf / sheet

'das Blatt' and 'die Schaufel' can occur together when talking about a tool. On a shovel, the wide, flat part at the front is the 'Blatt'; the whole thing with the handle is called a 'Schaufel'. So the words are not really the same, but refer to part and whole. They can be confused because the shovel blade is very noticeable. If you mean the tool used for digging, you say 'Schaufel'. If you only mean the flat front part, 'Blatt' is more precise.
