The word is made up of 'schief' (crooked, not straight) and 'gehen' (to go). When a plan 'schiefgeht' (goes wrong), figuratively speaking, it does not follow the straight, planned path, but turns off in the wrong direction.

'in die Hose gehen' and 'schiefgehen' both mean that something does not work out as planned. 'schiefgehen' is a normal verb and fits many situations when a plan, appointment, or action fails. 'in die Hose gehen' is more colloquial and figurative. It sounds more casual and is better suited to conversations with friends or colleagues. In formal texts or with serious topics, 'schiefgehen' is usually more natural. You use 'in die Hose gehen' when you want to say clearly: unfortunately, that did not work.
