Schlund vs Hals

neck / throat

'der Hals' and 'der Schlund' can both have to do with the area through which you swallow and breathe. However, 'Hals' is the normal everyday word and often means the front area that hurts when you are sick. 'Schlund' is more precise and technical or more vivid: it means the back area of the mouth and throat. Learners may confuse the words because both are located in roughly the same place in the body. In everyday language, you almost always say 'Hals', for example when talking about pain. 'Schlund' fits better in medical, biological, or dramatic descriptions.
