Schüssel vs Schale

shell / bowl

Schale and Schüssel are open, usually round containers for food. A Schale is usually smaller and shallower, while a Schüssel is usually larger and deeper; the distinction is not always clear-cut, however. Schale is generally more suitable for a small portion, and Schüssel for a larger quantity.
