Usage tips
Compound word
The word consists of 'schwarz' (black) and 'Fahrer' (driver/passenger). In this context, 'schwarz' does not mean the color, but 'illegal' or 'without permission.' A 'Schwarzfahrer' is therefore someone who rides illegally.
EXAMPLE
Ohne Ticket zu fahren, nennt man schwarzfahren.
Riding without a ticket is called 'schwarzfahren' (to fare-dodge).
The verb 'schwarzfahren'
The separable verb 'schwarzfahren' (to ride without a ticket) is derived from the noun 'der Schwarzfahrer' (fare dodger). In a main clause, the prefix stands at the end. This verb describes the act of riding without a ticket.
EXAMPLE
Er ist heute Morgen schwarzgefahren, weil er sein Portemonnaie vergessen hatte.
He rode without a ticket this morning because he had forgotten his wallet.
The 'Schwarz-' word family
The prefix 'schwarz-' in the meaning 'illegal' is also found in other words. Examples include 'die Schwarzarbeit' (illegal work) or 'der Schwarzmarkt' (black market/illegal trade).
EXAMPLE
Auf dem Schwarzmarkt werden oft gestohlene Waren verkauft.
Stolen goods are often sold on the black market.

Schwarzfahrer vs Passagier
passenger
'der Passagier' and 'der Schwarzfahrer' can both refer to a person on public transportation. 'Passagier' is neutral: the person is riding along, for example on a bus, train, or airplane. 'Schwarzfahrer' is more specific and negative: the person is traveling without a valid ticket. The words can be confused because a fare dodger is also riding along. But not every passenger is a fare dodger. If it is only about the journey, you say 'Passagier'; if the missing ticket is important, you say 'Schwarzfahrer'.
