Sintflut vs Flut

tide / flood

'die Flut' and 'die Sintflut' both have to do with a lot of water or with a very large amount. 'Flut' is the normal word for a flood or for a large amount of something. 'Sintflut' sounds much stronger and more dramatic. It recalls a huge, all-covering flood from religious or mythical stories. In everyday language, 'Sintflut' is often used exaggeratedly when it is raining extremely heavily. Learners may confuse the words because both can mean a lot of water. When speaking factually about water on streets or in basements, 'Flut' or 'Überschwemmung' usually fits. 'Sintflut' is more suitable for very heavy rain or when you want to make the amount seem especially huge.
