soeben vs jetzt

now

'jetzt' and 'soeben' both have to do with a time very close to the present. 'jetzt' means the current moment: something is happening at this moment or should happen immediately. 'soeben', on the other hand, means that something happened a very short moment ago. It sounds somewhat more formal than 'gerade' (just / right now). The words can be confused because both refer to a very near point in time. The important point is: 'jetzt' points to the present moment, while 'soeben' looks back just a very short time.
