Word family
The word 'Spanisch' (Spanish) is derived from the country 'Spanien' (Spain). As with many languages derived from country names, the adjective ('spanisch') is capitalized and used as a neuter noun ('das Spanisch').

I'm learning Spanish right now for my trip to South America.
Use without an article
When talking about the language in general, 'Spanisch' (Spanish) is usually used without an article. An article is only used when you mean a specific form of the language.

Do you speak Spanish?
Das Spanisch, das in Argentinien gesprochen wird, klingt anders.
The Spanish spoken in Argentina sounds different.
Typical collocations
Common verbs used with languages are 'lernen' (to learn), 'sprechen' (to speak), 'verstehen' (to understand), and 'übersetzen' (to translate). The phrase 'auf Spanisch' (in Spanish) is also very common for describing the language of a medium.
