A paved strip at an airport that airplanes use for takeoff and landing.
example
Wegen des starken Seitenwinds durfte das Flugzeug die Startbahn nicht benutzen.
Because of the strong crosswind, the airplane was not allowed to use the runway.
Usage tips
Compound word
The word 'Startbahn' (runway) is made up of 'Start' (from starten, to start) and 'Bahn' (track, path, runway). So it literally describes a strip or track on which something starts.
EXAMPLE
Das Flugzeug wartet auf die Freigabe für die Startbahn.
The airplane is waiting for clearance for the runway.
Also for landing
Although the word is 'Startbahn' (runway, literally takeoff strip), the same strip is also used for airplanes to land. The official term is 'Start- und Landebahn' (runway, literally takeoff and landing strip), but in everyday language people often just say 'Startbahn'.
EXAMPLE
Nach der Landung rollte die Maschine langsam von der Startbahn.
After landing, the aircraft slowly rolled off the runway.
Typical verbs
Typical verbs used with 'Startbahn' (runway) are 'auf die Startbahn rollen' (to taxi onto the runway), 'von der Startbahn abheben' (to take off from the runway), and 'auf der Startbahn landen' (to land on the runway).
EXAMPLE
Die Passagiere spürten, wie das Flugzeug von der Startbahn abhob.
The passengers felt the airplane take off from the runway.

Startbahn vs Vorfeld
lead-up / apron
'das Vorfeld' and 'die Startbahn' can both occur at an airport, but there they refer to different areas. The apron is the area where airplanes stand, are loaded, refueled, or prepared. The runway is the long strip where airplanes take off and land. The words can be confused because both have to do with airplanes and airports. Remember: on the apron, things are prepared; on the runway, the airplane moves during takeoff or landing.
Startbahn
Wegen des starken Schnees blieb die Startbahn eine Stunde lang gesperrt.
Because of the heavy snow, the runway remained closed for an hour.
Vorfeld
Vom Fenster aus sahen die Kinder mehrere Flugzeuge auf dem Vorfeld stehen.
From the window, the children saw several airplanes standing on the apron.
