A paved strip at an airport that airplanes use for takeoff and landing.

The word 'Startbahn' (runway) is made up of 'Start' (from starten, to start) and 'Bahn' (track, path, runway). So it literally describes a strip or track on which something starts.

'das Vorfeld' and 'die Startbahn' can both occur at an airport, but there they refer to different areas. The apron is the area where airplanes stand, are loaded, refueled, or prepared. The runway is the long strip where airplanes take off and land. The words can be confused because both have to do with airplanes and airports. Remember: on the apron, things are prepared; on the runway, the airplane moves during takeoff or landing.
