To feel great surprise or astonishment about something unexpected, impressive, or unusual. Often used in combination with 'über' (about/at).
Die Kinder staunten über die Größe des Elefanten im Zoo.

'Staunen' (to be amazed) is very often used with the preposition 'über' and the accusative to state the reason for the amazement.
Ich staune immer wieder über deine Geduld.
I am amazed again and again by your patience.
You can also express the reason for the amazement with a subordinate clause. For this, use the construction 'darüber staunen, wie/dass/was ...' (to be amazed at how/that/what ...).
Wir staunten darüber, wie schnell das Gebäude fertiggestellt wurde.
We were amazed at how quickly the building was completed.
The colloquial expression 'nicht schlecht staunen' expresses very great, often unexpected surprise.
Als sie den Preis hörte, staunte sie nicht schlecht.
When she heard the price, she was really amazed.
to wonder / surprise
'sich wundern' and 'staunen' both describe being surprised. 'Sich wundern' often fits when something is unexpected or you do not really understand it. It can be neutral or also sound a little critical. 'Staunen' sounds stronger and often more positive: you are very surprised because something is special, beautiful, or impressive. If you receive a strange message, you are more likely to use 'sich wundern'. If you see a wonderful view, you are more likely to use 'staunen'.
Im Urlaub staunt sie über die hellen Farben des Meeres.
On vacation, she is amazed by the bright colors of the sea.
