Stiefelette vs Stiefel

boot

'Stiefel' and 'Stiefelette' both refer to shoes with a shaft that goes beyond a normal shoe. The difference is mainly the height. A 'Stiefel' can be taller and cover more of the leg, for example up to the calf or knee. A 'Stiefelette' is only ankle-high. They can be confused because a 'Stiefelette' is a kind of short boot. If the height is important, 'Stiefelette' is more precise; otherwise people often use the general word 'Stiefel'.
