A usually verbal, often loud and emotional conflict or argument between two or more people. The term often has a slightly negative connotation and describes an argument that is perceived as unnecessary, petty, or repeated.

The word is derived from the verb 'streiten' (to argue). The ending '-ei' is often used to describe an action that is perceived as ongoing, annoying, or unnecessary.

To state the reason for the argument, you use 'über' (about/over) or 'um' (about/over) with the accusative. The person you are arguing with is indicated with 'mit' (with) and the dative.

The word is often used in the plural ('Streitereien', quarrels/arguments) and with adjectives such as 'ständig' (constant), 'ewig' (endless), or 'kleinlich' (petty) to emphasize the repeated and irritating nature of the conflict.

argument / dispute
'der Streit' and 'die Streiterei' both mean a dispute, usually with words. 'der Streit' is more neutral and can be small or serious. 'die Streiterei' often sounds negative: you see the argument as unnecessary, petty, or annoying. In addition, 'Streiterei' can also mean that people keep arguing again and again. Learners may confuse the words because they are very close in meaning. If you simply want to say objectively that there is a conflict, use 'Streit'. If you want to show that constant or petty arguing is bothering you, 'Streiterei' fits better.
Im Park wurde die Streiterei zwischen den Jugendlichen immer lauter.
