Spelling
The number 1000 is normally written simply as 'tausend' (thousand). The form 'eintausend' (one thousand) is only used when special precision is required, for example on a check or in a contract.

The concert had more than a thousand visitors.
Lowercase spelling
As a number word, 'tausend' (thousand) is written in lowercase. Only when it is used as a noun for an indefinite, large quantity ('Tausende von Menschen' — thousands of people) is it capitalized.

Use as exaggeration

'viel' and 'tausend' can both express that there is a large amount. 'viel' is neutral and imprecise; you use it when the exact amount is not important. 'tausend' is actually the exact number 1000.
