'das Taxi' and 'der Mietwagen' can both be a car that you use for money. With a 'Taxi', a driver drives, and you can often call it directly or take one at a taxi stand. The price usually depends on the distance. A 'Mietwagen' is usually a car that you rent for a certain period of time and drive yourself. However, there are also hired cars with drivers; these normally have to be booked in advance and drive for a fixed price. Learners may confuse the words because both have to do with paid rides or driving. In everyday usage: traveling spontaneously with a driver is usually called 'Taxi', while renting a car to drive yourself is called 'Mietwagen'.
