tendieren vs bevorzugen

to prefer

'bevorzugen' and 'tendieren zu' both express that someone leans more toward one option. 'bevorzugen' is clearer and stronger: you like or choose one thing more than another. 'tendieren zu' is more cautious and less final. It means that, at the moment, you are leaning in one direction or have a slight inclination. Learners may confuse the words because both fit when making decisions. If the choice is already fairly clear, you say 'bevorzugen'. If you are still unsure or only see a general direction, 'tendieren zu' fits better.

Visual example for bevorzugen
tendieren

Bei der Farbe tendiert Max zu Blau, aber entschieden hat er noch nicht.

For the color, Max is leaning toward blue, but he has not decided yet.

bevorzugen

Für den Urlaub bevorzugt sie ein ruhiges Hotel am Meer.

For her vacation, she prefers a quiet hotel by the sea.
