'Pfarrer' and 'Theologe' both have to do with religion and the Christian faith, but they do not mean the same thing. A 'Pfarrer' has a church office and works in a congregation. A 'Theologe' has studied theology and may work academically on religion, teach, or also be a clergy member. Learners may confuse the words because many pastors have studied theology. But not every theologian is a pastor, and not every conversation about religion takes place in a congregation. For the office in the church, you say 'Pfarrer'; for the training or academic work, 'Theologe' is more likely.
