A measuring device for determining temperature. It is used in many areas, for example in medicine to take someone's temperature, in the kitchen, or in meteorology to measure air temperature.

The word comes from Greek: 'thermos' means 'warm' and 'metron' means 'measure'. A 'Thermometer' (thermometer) is therefore literally a 'heat measurer'.

To specify the type of thermometer, it is often used as part of a compound word. Examples are 'Fieberthermometer' (clinical thermometer, for the body), 'Außenthermometer' (outdoor thermometer, for the air), or 'Bratenthermometer' (meat thermometer, for the kitchen).
