A measuring device for determining temperature. It is used in many areas, for example in medicine to take someone's temperature, in the kitchen, or in meteorology to measure air temperature.

The word comes from Greek: 'thermos' means 'warm' and 'metron' means 'measure'. A 'Thermometer' (thermometer) is therefore literally a 'heat measurer'.

'Thermometer' and 'Barometer' are both measuring instruments and can have to do with the weather. The important difference is what they measure. A 'Thermometer' measures temperature, for example fever, air temperature, or temperature when cooking. A 'Barometer' measures air pressure and often helps with weather forecasting. Learners may confuse the words because both instruments display values and sound similar. Memory aid: temperature with a 'Thermometer', air pressure with a 'Barometer'.
