Usage tips
Word structure
The word is easy to understand if you recognize its structure: the prefix 'un-' negates the adjective 'bedeutend' (important, significant). Something that is 'unbedeutend' (insignificant) therefore has no significance.
EXAMPLE
Der Kratzer am Auto ist so klein, er ist wirklich unbedeutend.
The scratch on the car is so small; it is really insignificant.
Typical collocations
A very common phrase is 'eine unbedeutende Rolle spielen' (to play an insignificant role). The adjective is also often used with nouns such as 'Detail' (detail), 'Fehler' (mistake/error), or 'Unterschied' (difference).
EXAMPLE
In diesem Prozess spielt Geld nur eine unbedeutende Rolle.
In this process, money plays only an insignificant role.
Use with adverbs
To indicate the degree of unimportance, 'unbedeutend' (insignificant) is often combined with adverbs. 'Völlig unbedeutend' (completely insignificant) or 'gänzlich unbedeutend' (entirely insignificant) means that something is not important at all.
EXAMPLE
Seine Meinung ist für die endgültige Entscheidung völlig unbedeutend.
His opinion is completely insignificant for the final decision.

unbedeutend vs groß
big / great
'groß' and 'unbedeutend' are opposites here when it comes to importance, influence, or scale. 'groß' describes something important, strong, or effective. 'unbedeutend' describes something that is hardly important and has little influence. For example, you use 'groß' for 'ein großer Erfolg' (a great success) or 'ein großes Problem' (a major problem). 'unbedeutend' fits when something is so small or unimportant that it can almost be disregarded.
unbedeutend
Der Fehler im Formular ist unbedeutend und muss nicht geändert werden.
The error in the form is insignificant and does not need to be changed.
groß
Für die Prüfung ist dieses Thema sehr groß und wichtig.
For the exam, this topic is very broad and important.
