Usage tips
Anglicism
'Thread' is an English loanword that is mainly used in digital communication (internet, email) and in computer science. It is declined like a German noun, for example in the genitive: des Threads.
EXAMPLE
Die Antwort auf deine Frage findest du am Anfang des Threads.
You can find the answer to your question at the beginning of the thread.
Typical collocations
In the context of online discussions, 'Thread' is often used with these verbs: einen Thread eröffnen or starten (to open or start a thread), einen Thread verfolgen (to follow a thread), or in einem Thread antworten (to reply in a thread).
EXAMPLE
Der Moderator hat einen neuen Thread zum Thema eröffnet.
The moderator opened a new thread on the topic.
Context clue
You can recognize the technical meaning from computer science by the specialist context. When the topic is programming, processes, or CPU performance, it refers to an execution thread, not a discussion.
EXAMPLE
Ein einzelner Thread kann den Prozessor zu 100% auslasten.
A single thread can use 100% of the processor.

Thread vs Thema
topic / theme
'das Thema' and 'der Thread' can both have to do with a discussion. 'das Thema' is the content that people talk or write about. 'der Thread' is the whole chain of posts in a forum, on social media, or in an email exchange. So a thread usually has a topic, but it is not the same as the topic. Learners may confuse the words because online people often say that a thread is 'über ein Thema' (about a topic). If you mean the content, say 'Thema'. If you mean the online discussion with its replies, say 'Thread'.
Thread
