'Thread' is an English loanword that is mainly used in digital communication (internet, email) and in computer science. It is declined like a German noun, for example in the genitive: des Threads.

In the context of online discussions, 'Thread' is often used with these verbs: einen Thread eröffnen or starten (to open or start a thread), einen Thread verfolgen (to follow a thread), or in einem Thread antworten (to reply in a thread).

You can recognize the technical meaning from computer science by the specialist context. When the topic is programming, processes, or CPU performance, it refers to an execution thread, not a discussion.

'das Thema' and 'der Thread' can both have to do with a discussion. 'das Thema' is the content that people talk or write about. 'der Thread' is the whole chain of posts in a forum, on social media, or in an email exchange. So a thread usually has a topic, but it is not the same as the topic. Learners may confuse the words because online people often say that a thread is 'über ein Thema' (about a topic). If you mean the content, say 'Thema'. If you mean the online discussion with its replies, say 'Thread'.
