The word is built very logically: it consists of 'das Tier' (animal) and 'die Ärztin' (female doctor). A Tierärztin is therefore literally a doctor for animals.

To say that you are going to see a veterinarian, you use the preposition 'zu' (with dative). To express that you are there or have an appointment there, you use 'bei' (with dative).

Common verbs in connection with 'Tierärztin' (female veterinarian) are 'ein Tier behandeln' (to treat an animal), 'ein Tier untersuchen lassen' (to have an animal examined), or 'einen Termin machen' (to make an appointment).

'der Tierarzt' and 'die Tierärztin' both refer to a person who treats sick or injured animals. The most important difference is grammatical and natural gender: 'der Tierarzt' refers to a man, or can sometimes stand for the profession in general. 'die Tierärztin' explicitly refers to a woman. The words can be confused because they mean the same profession. If the person is known, choose the appropriate form: a man is a 'Tierarzt', a woman is a 'Tierärztin'.
