Tower vs Turm

tower

'der Turm' and 'der Tower' can both mean a tall, narrow structure. 'Turm' is the normal German word and is especially suitable for churches, castles, observation towers, or old buildings. 'Tower' sounds more modern and is often used for very tall buildings with an English name. Learners may confuse the words because 'Tower' seems literally like 'Turm'. In everyday language, however, 'Turm' is usually the safe choice, unless a building is officially called a 'Tower' or you are deliberately talking about a modern high-rise.
