A general direction of development or a prevailing current in a particular area over a certain period of time, e.g. in fashion, society, or the economy.
Der Trend geht eindeutig zu kleineren, sparsameren Autos.

To describe the direction of a development, you use 'der Trend zu' (the trend toward) with the dative. To express that something is fashionable or current, you say it 'liegt im Trend' (is on trend).

Common verbs used with 'Trend' are 'einem Trend folgen' (to follow a trend), 'einen Trend setzen' (to set a trend, i.e. start a new development), or 'sich einem Trend anschließen' (to join a trend).

Entwicklung refers to the longer-term process of change or the result that emerges from it. Trend, by contrast, refers to the prevailing direction that can be identified within such changes. When considering several changes as a whole, you use Entwicklung; when emphasizing their shared direction, you use Trend.
Der Trend im Kaufverhalten geht seit fünf Jahren zu regionalen Produkten.
