A high-pitched brass instrument that is made to sound by blowing into a cup-shaped mouthpiece and is often used in orchestras, jazz bands, and military music.

When talking about playing an instrument as a skill or hobby, German often uses no article. So you say 'er lernt Trompete' (he is learning trumpet) or 'sie spielt Trompete' (she plays trumpet).

In connection with the instrument, the verbs 'spielen' (to play), 'üben' (to practice), and 'lernen' (to learn) are often used. You can also say 'in die Trompete blasen' (to blow into the trumpet).

When 'Trompete' refers to a person, it usually appears in the context of a professional orchestra and is often combined with an ordinal number such as 'erste' (first) or 'zweite' (second). The verb is then often 'sein' (to be).

'das Horn' and 'die Trompete' can both be brass instruments. That makes them easy to confuse, especially if you only know that both are played in an orchestra. But they are different instruments. The horn has a long, coiled tube and often sounds soft and full. The trumpet is usually built straighter and has a brighter, clearer sound. Also important: 'Horn' has other meanings too, for example on an animal or on a car. In this comparison, 'Trompete' means only the musical instrument. So in an orchestra, you say exactly 'Horn' or 'Trompete', depending on which instrument is meant.
Bei der Jazzprobe übernahm die Trompete das schnelle Solo.
At the jazz rehearsal, the trumpet took the fast solo.
