Usage tips
Word structure
The verb is made up of the prefix 'über-' and the verb 'bewerten' (to evaluate, to assign a value). The prefix 'über-' here means 'too much' or 'too high.'
EXAMPLE
Er neigt dazu, die Bedeutung kleiner Gesten zu überbewerten.
He tends to overvalue the meaning of small gestures.
Inseparable verb
'Überbewerten' is an inseparable verb. The prefix 'über-' remains firmly attached to the verb in all tenses and sentence constructions and is not moved to the end of the sentence.
EXAMPLE
Ich glaube, du überbewertest dieses Problem.
I think you're overvaluing this problem.
Use with the accusative
The verb 'überbewerten' is always used with an accusative object. You overvalue 'etwas' (something) or 'jemanden' (someone).
EXAMPLE
Man sollte die erste Reaktion der Kunden nicht überbewerten.
One shouldn't overvalue the customers' first reaction.

überbewerten vs bewerten
to evaluate / appraise
'bewerten' and 'überbewerten' are built in a similar way, but they do not mean the same thing. 'bewerten' neutrally means that you assess the value, quality, or significance of something. This can be positive, negative, or objective. 'überbewerten' means that you take something too seriously or give it too high a value. So the word already contains a criticism. Learners may confuse the words because 'überbewerten' looks like a stronger form of 'bewerten'. The important point is: you can evaluate something correctly, but if you 'überbewerten' it, the assessment is too high or gives it too much importance.
überbewerten
Ihr überbewertet diesen kleinen Fehler in den Medien.
You are overvaluing this small mistake in the media.
