überheblich vs stolz

proud

'stolz' and 'überheblich' can both have to do with a strong sense of self. 'stolz' is often positive: you are happy about an achievement or stand by who you are. But it can also come across negatively if someone focuses too much on themselves. 'überheblich' is clearly negative and means that someone feels better or smarter than others and behaves accordingly. The risk of confusion lies in the fact that a very proud manner can sometimes seem arrogant. The difference is: 'stolz' does not require comparison with others; 'überheblich' places itself above others.
