To spend the night at a place that is not your own home, for example in a hotel, a youth hostel, or at friends' place.

After the long drive, we stayed overnight in a small hotel along the way.
Usage tips
Inseparable verb
'Übernachten' (to stay overnight) is an inseparable verb. The prefix 'über-' remains firmly attached to the verb in all tenses and sentence constructions.
EXAMPLE
Wir übernachten heute bei meiner Tante.
We are staying overnight at my aunt's today.
Word family
The related noun is 'die Übernachtung' (overnight stay). It is often used in travel contexts, for example in the combination 'Übernachtung mit Frühstück' (overnight stay with breakfast).
EXAMPLE
Das Hotel bietet eine Übernachtung für zwei Personen an.
The hotel offers an overnight stay for two people.
Correct preposition
To indicate the place, you usually use the prepositions 'in' + dative for buildings or places and 'bei' + dative for people.
EXAMPLE
Können wir heute Nacht bei dir übernachten?
Can we stay overnight at your place tonight?
Compare with
confusable
übernachten vs bleiben
to stay / remain
'bleiben' and 'übernachten' can both mean that someone does not leave right away. However, they are used in different situations. 'bleiben' is general: you can stay in a place for an hour, the whole day, or even longer. 'übernachten' is more specific and means that you spend the night there, usually not in your own home. Learners can easily confuse the words because when you stay overnight, you also stay. But not every instance of staying is an overnight stay.
übernachten
Die Gäste übernachten am Wochenende bei meinen Eltern.
The guests are staying overnight at my parents' place this weekend.
