'bleiben' and 'übernachten' can both mean that someone does not leave right away. However, they are used in different situations. 'bleiben' is general: you can stay in a place for an hour, the whole day, or even longer. 'übernachten' is more specific and means that you spend the night there, usually not in your own home. Learners can easily confuse the words because when you stay overnight, you also stay. But not every instance of staying is an overnight stay.
