Usage tips
Word structure
The word is a clear compound of 'über' (over/across) and 'See' (sea). It literally describes places that you reach by traveling across the sea, that is, on other continents.
EXAMPLE
Der Handel mit den Kolonien in Übersee war sehr profitabel.
Trade with the colonies overseas was very profitable.
Adverbial use
'Übersee' (overseas) is usually used like an adverb and is not declined, especially after prepositions such as 'nach' (to), 'in' (in), or 'aus' (from). It describes a direction or a place.
EXAMPLE
Er importiert exotische Früchte aus Übersee.
He imports exotic fruits from overseas.
Part of nouns
'Übersee-' (overseas) is a common component of compound nouns related to international trade or travel. Examples include 'Überseehandel' (overseas trade), 'Überseecontainer' (shipping container), or 'Überseereise' (overseas trip).
EXAMPLE
Im Hafen werden täglich tausende Überseecontainer verladen.
Thousands of shipping containers are loaded at the port every day.

übersee vs Ausland
abroad
'das Ausland' and 'übersee' can both refer to places outside one's own country. But 'das Ausland' is the general term for all other countries, including neighboring countries. 'Übersee' is narrower: it refers to countries or regions on another continent that are separated by a sea or ocean. The words can be confused when you simply mean 'not here'. For a vacation in France, from a German point of view you would say 'im Ausland' (abroad), but normally not 'übersee' (overseas). 'Übersee' fits better for more distant countries like Canada, Australia, or Brazil.
übersee
Wegen der neuen Stelle zieht Paul für zwei Jahre nach Übersee.
Because of the new job, Paul is moving overseas for two years.
Ausland
Im nächsten Jahr möchte meine Schwester im Ausland studieren.
