The word is built simply: the prefix 'un-' negates the adjective 'angenehm' (pleasant). So it literally means 'not pleasant'. You will find this structure with 'un-' in many German adjectives.

To express that a situation is embarrassing or uncomfortable for a person, you use a fixed structure with the dative: 'Es ist [person in the dative] unangenehm, ... zu ...' (It is unpleasant/embarrassing for [person] to ...).

'schön' and 'unangenehm' can both describe how you experience a situation, an event, or a feeling. Here, 'schön' means that something feels good, pleasant, or enjoyable. 'unangenehm' is the opposite: something gives you a bad feeling, is embarrassing, disturbing, or not nice to experience. For appearance, the opposite of 'schön' is more likely 'hässlich' (ugly). But when it is about a conversation, a smell, pain, or an embarrassing situation, 'unangenehm' is more precise.
