'Veraltet' (outdated) is the past participle of the verb 'veralten' (to become outdated). The prefix 'ver-' describes a process or change here. Together with 'alt' (old), 'veralten' therefore means to become old and unusable over time.

When describing views, gestrig and veraltet can both mean that something is no longer up to date. Veraltet describes this more objectively; gestrig uses figurative and critical language to characterize a way of thinking as backward-looking. Use veraltet for a neutral statement and gestrig for stronger criticism.
