Usage tips
Word structure
'Veraltet' (outdated) is the past participle of the verb 'veralten' (to become outdated). The prefix 'ver-' describes a process or change here. Together with 'alt' (old), 'veralten' therefore means to become old and unusable over time.
EXAMPLE
Viele alte Traditionen veralten langsam.
Many old traditions are slowly becoming outdated.
Typical collocations
The word often describes things that have been superseded by new developments. Common combinations are: 'veraltete Technik' (outdated technology), 'veraltete Methoden' (outdated methods), 'veraltete Gesetze' (outdated laws), 'veraltete Ansichten' (outdated views), or 'veraltete Informationen' (outdated information).
EXAMPLE
Das Buch enthält viele veraltete Informationen und muss überarbeitet werden.
The book contains a lot of outdated information and needs to be revised.
Sentence structure
'Veraltet' (outdated) is very often used with the verb 'sein' (to be) to describe a state, e.g. 'Etwas ist veraltet' (Something is outdated). But it can also stand directly before a noun, e.g. 'ein veraltetes Gerät' (an outdated device).
EXAMPLE
Dieses Betriebssystem ist leider schon lange veraltet.
Unfortunately, this operating system has been outdated for a long time.

veraltet vs alt
old
'alt' and 'veraltet' both have to do with something that is not new. 'alt' mainly describes the age of an object or thing. This can be neutral: an old book can be interesting and valuable. 'veraltet', on the other hand, means that something is no longer modern, no longer suitable, or no longer commonly used. This is often said about technology, information, methods, or words. Learners may confuse the words because outdated things are usually old. But 'alt' is not automatically bad; 'veraltet' shows that something no longer really fits today.
veraltet
Die Firma benutzt noch ein veraltetes Computerprogramm.
The company still uses an outdated computer program.
