Verblendung vs Illusion

illusion

'die Illusion' and 'die Verblendung' both describe a situation where someone does not see reality correctly. 'Illusion' is usually a false hope or idea. You can have one without being completely irrational because of it. 'Verblendung' is stronger and more critical. It refers to a state in which someone can no longer judge clearly because of feelings, ideas, or false beliefs. Learners may confuse the words because both express a lack of connection to reality. 'Illusion' fits better for a single false expectation; 'Verblendung' fits when someone permanently or strongly does not want to, or cannot, see reality.
