'der Vertrag' and 'die Vereinbarung' both describe several sides establishing something together. 'der Vertrag' is usually formal, often written, and legally binding. You might think of work, rent, purchases, or insurance, for example. 'die Vereinbarung' is broader: it can be written, but also verbal and less official. Learners may confuse the words because a contract is also a type of agreement. When legal certainty and an official document are important, 'Vertrag' fits better. When it is only about an arrangement between people, 'Vereinbarung' sounds more natural.
