Usage tips
Long or short
In German, the distinction between long and short vowels is very important because it can change the meaning of words. Therefore, people often speak of a 'langen Vokal' (long vowel), as in 'Ofen' (oven), or a 'kurzen Vokal' (short vowel), as in 'offen' (open).
EXAMPLE
Der Unterschied zwischen „Staat“ und „Stadt“ liegt in der Länge des Vokals „a“.
The difference between 'Staat' (state) and 'Stadt' (city) lies in the length of the vowel 'a'.
Linguistic term
'Vokal' (vowel) is a technical term from linguistics. It is used when talking about letters, sounds, and the structure of words. Its direct counterpart is the 'Konsonant' (consonant).
EXAMPLE
Jede Silbe im Deutschen enthält mindestens einen Vokal.
Every syllable in German contains at least one vowel.
Umlauts and diphthongs
In addition to the basic vowels a, e, i, o, u, the umlauts (ä, ö, ü) also count as vowels. Vowel combinations such as 'au', 'ei', or 'eu' are called 'Diphthonge' (diphthongs).
EXAMPLE
Das Wort „Häuser“ enthält den Umlaut „äu“, einen Diphthong.
The word 'Häuser' contains the umlaut 'äu', a diphthong.

Vokal vs Buchstabe
letter
'Buchstabe' and 'Vokal' both belong to the topic of writing and language. 'Buchstabe' is the general term for a single character in the alphabet. 'Vokal' is more specific and means only vowel sounds such as a, e, i, o, u, as well as ä, ö, and ü. The words can be confused because a vowel is often also written as a letter. But not every letter is a vowel. If you are speaking generally about the alphabet, use 'Buchstabe'. If you are talking about vowel sounds, use 'Vokal'.
Vokal
Im Wort „Haus“ ist das „au“ ein Vokal-Laut.
In the word 'Haus', 'au' is a vowel sound.
Buchstabe
Sie schreibt jeden Buchstaben langsam an die Tafel.
