Usage tips

Typical collocations

'Voodoo' is often used with verbs such as 'praktizieren' (to practice) and 'ausüben' (to practice), as well as in compounds such as 'Voodoo-Ritual' (Voodoo ritual) and 'Voodoo-Zeremonie' (Voodoo ceremony). The word is generally used to refer to a religious tradition.

EXAMPLE

Die Familie praktiziert Voodoo und nimmt regelmäßig an religiösen Zeremonien teil.

The family practices Voodoo and regularly takes part in religious ceremonies.

Cultural context

In factual texts, Voodoo is described as a religion and cultural tradition. Portrayals that associate Voodoo exclusively with black magic or dangerous spells oversimplify this tradition considerably.

EXAMPLE

Der Dokumentarfilm zeigt Voodoo als lebendige religiöse Tradition in Haiti.

The documentary portrays Voodoo as a living religious tradition in Haiti.

Context words

The meaning as a religion can often be recognized from words in a religious context, such as 'Geister' (spirits), 'Gott' (God), 'Gläubige' (believers), 'Ritual' (ritual), or 'Zeremonie' (ceremony). A reference to Haiti is also a typical clue.

EXAMPLE

Im Voodoo bitten die Gläubigen bei religiösen Zeremonien die Geister um Schutz.

In Voodoo, believers ask the spirits for protection during religious ceremonies.
