'Wechselnd' (changing/alternating) is the present participle of the verb 'wechseln' (to change/switch). It is used as an adjective and describes something that is currently changing or whose characteristic is that it changes.
Das wechselnde Licht der Ampel signalisierte den Autofahrern, zu warten.
The changing light of the traffic signal indicated to the drivers that they should wait.
This adjective is often used to describe things that are not constant. Typical combinations are 'wechselndes Wetter' (changeable weather), 'wechselnde Angebote' (changing offers), or 'wechselnde Stimmungen' (changing moods).
Ich kann mich bei diesem wechselnden Wetter nicht entscheiden, was ich anziehen soll.
I can't decide what to wear in this changeable weather.
'Wechselnd' can also be used as an adverb to modify another adjective. A very common use appears in weather reports, for example 'wechselnd bewölkt' (partly cloudy / variably cloudy).
Morgen wird es bei Temperaturen um 20 Grad wechselnd bewölkt sein.
Tomorrow it will be partly cloudy with temperatures around 20 degrees.

'unterschiedlich' and 'wechselnd' both describe that something is not always the same. 'unterschiedlich' usually compares several things, people, or cases with one another. 'wechselnd' more strongly emphasizes that something changes over time or alternates. That is why they can be confused when talking about different states. As a simple guide: if two things are not the same, 'unterschiedlich' often fits. If something keeps changing, 'wechselnd' is more likely to fit.
