A motor vehicle that is equipped with living facilities such as beds, a kitchen, and often also a toilet. It is used for travel and camping.
example
They sold their house and now travel through Europe in a motorhome.
Usage tips
Compound word
The word is a combination of 'wohnen' (to live/reside) and 'mobil' (mobile). So it logically describes a vehicle that is mobile and in which one can live.
EXAMPLE
In the summer, we want to rent a motorhome for a trip to Scandinavia.
False friend
A 'Wohnmobil' (motorhome/RV) is a vehicle for travel. It is not the same as the English 'mobile home', which describes a stationary prefabricated home. Such a house is called 'Mobilheim' in German.
EXAMPLE
They parked their motorhome at a campsite by the lake.
Typical prepositions
Pay attention to the difference in prepositions: You travel 'mit dem Wohnmobil' (by/in the motorhome), but you sleep, eat, or live 'im Wohnmobil' (in the motorhome).
EXAMPLE
We traveled through all of Italy in the motorhome.

Wohnmobil vs Wohnwagen
caravan / travel trailer
'Wohnwagen' and 'Wohnmobil' are both vehicles or accommodations for travel and camping. You can sleep in both, and often cook in them too. The important difference is: a 'Wohnwagen' is a trailer and needs a car to tow it. A 'Wohnmobil' is its own motor vehicle with an engine. The words are easy to confuse because both are used in similar ways. A practical way to remember it: you attach the Wohnwagen to the car; with the Wohnmobil, you drive it yourself.
Wohnmobil
We are traveling through southern Germany in the motorhome this summer.
Wohnwagen
At the campsite, they parked the caravan next to a small lake.
