'die Umfrage' and 'der Zensus' are both forms of data collection. A survey can be done on many topics and usually asks a selected group about their opinions or behavior. A census is official and carried out by the government. It collects statistical data about the population, similar to a population census. Learners may confuse the words because both involve questions and data. For normal surveys in everyday life or in companies, use 'Umfrage'. For a government survey about the population, 'Zensus' is the appropriate word.
