Usage tips
Separable verb
„Zurückwollen“ (to want to go back) consists of „zurück“ (back) and „wollen“ (to want). In a main clause, „zurück“ is separated and placed at the end of the sentence; in a subordinate clause with „weil“ (because), both parts remain together at the end.

Giving the destination
The destination can be added with a directional phrase: „nach“ (to) is commonly used with cities, while „zu“ (to) is used with the dative for people. An additional verb of motion is not needed.

After the vacation, he wanted to go back to Berlin.
Das Kind will zu seiner Mutter zurück.
The child wants to go back to its mother.
Accusative object
The thing someone wants back appears as an accusative object with „zurückwollen“ (to want back). It is often preceded by a possessive word such as „mein“ (my) or „dein“ (your), which makes the previous ownership clear.
