A dispute, argument, or disagreement between two or more people or parties. The term is often used for longer-lasting or deep-seated conflicts and is more elevated than the word 'Streit' (argument/dispute).

argument / dispute
'der Streit' and 'der Zwist' both refer to a conflict between people or groups. 'Streit' is the ordinary word for an argument or dispute, which can be short or long, small or heated. 'Zwist' sounds more elevated and often more serious. It fits especially when a conflict has been going on for a long time or runs deeper. In normal conversations, 'Streit' is much more natural. 'Zwist' feels more written or solemn and often describes ongoing tension.
