A dispute, argument, or disagreement between two or more people or parties. The term is often used for longer-lasting or deep-seated conflicts and is more elevated than the word 'Streit' (argument/dispute).

argument / dispute
Both words refer to a conflict between people or parties. Streit is used generally, even when it is only a single disagreement. Zwist is more elevated and suggests a longer-lasting or deeper estrangement. Use Streit neutrally in everyday situations and Zwist when this duration or depth is important.
Der jahrelange Zwist zwischen den beiden Familien belastete das ganze Dorf.
The years-long conflict between the two families burdened the entire village.
